LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State Stanislaus off to an outstanding start.
Strong starting pitching performances from
Isaac Morales and
Kyle Owsley paced the Golden Eagles to a pair of wins, 4-2 and 5-1, over the Warriors Saturday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A., ranked No. 1 in the nation and No. 1 in the NCAA Division II West Region, got back-to-back home runs from
Jack Roche and
Jeff Carroll to erase a 2-1 deficit in the opener, while
Kurt Crowell had a three-run double in the first inning to stake the Golden Eagles to a quick lead in the nightcap.
Cal State L.A. (34-7-1, 22-4) remains one-game behind CCAA leader Sonoma State. The Golden Eagles, who had to forfeit a pair of conference games earlier in the week, set a new school record for most conference wins in a season. The old mark of 21 was set by the 1997 and 2006 squads.
Carroll, who leads the conference in hitting with a .339 average, tied a pair of single-season Cal State L.A. records on Saturday. He scored three runs in the doubleheader to give him 58 runs scored this season and he also drove in a run to tie the single-season RBI record of 60.
The Golden Eagles' eight RBI in the doubleheader gives them 341, which breaks the old mark of 338.
Morales and Cal State Stanislaus starter Marquis Fleming engaged in a brilliant pitchers' duel in the opener. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when
Adam Klein delivered a run-scoring single. The Warriors responded with two runs in the fifth to take a brief lead. A.J. Valentine drilled a triple to drive in both runs.
The Golden Eagles, though, came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. Roche and Carroll hit back-to-back home runs to start the inning. It was Roche's second home run of the season, while Carroll smacked his 15th.
Brian Hernandez drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a double by
Matt Winkelman.
Morales left after six innings. He allowed only two hits, walked six and struck out eight while improving to 9-0.
John Mitchell was flawless in two scoreless innings, retiring all six batters he faced with a pair of strikeouts and
Arturo Reyes struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his seventh save of the season.
Fleming tossed a complete game for the Warriors, but took the loss.
In the nightcap,
Adam Klein, Roche and Carroll drew walks to start the first inning for Cal State L.A. Crowell then drilled a double to straightaway center to drive in all three runners.
The Golden Eagles made it 4-0 in the third inning when
Brian Hernandez delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in Carroll. Cal State L.A. made it 5-0 in the fourth inning when
Darrick Hale scored on a balk.
Owsley carried a no-hitter in the sixth inning, but Kyle Bonvechio ended the no-hit bid with a solo home run. Owsley finished with a complete-game two-hitter. He walked two and struck out eight.
The Golden Eagles and Warriors will complete the series with a doubleheader on Sunday at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
