Golden Eagles See Playoff Run Stopped By Falcons

SEATTLE -- Cal State L.A.'s women' s soccer team saw its best-ever season come to an end Thursday in the NCAA Far West Region championship game.

The Golden Eagles stymied Seattle Pacific for a half, but the Falcons scored a pair of second-half goals to post a 2-0 victory at Interbay Stadium. Cal State L.A. (13-6-4), the sixth-seed in the region, set new program records for wins in a season and shutouts (12).

Reyna Coca, who has been so outstanding for the Golden Eagles throughout the playoffs, had another terrific start on Thursday. She made six saves, including a pair of big stops - one in each half - that kept the Golden Eagles' hopes alive. Seattle Pacific (22-0), ranked second in the nation, got the go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute on a goal by Shannon Oaks. The second goal came in the 74th minute when Janae Godoy headed in a rebound.

Seattle Pacific goalie Jesslyn Rahm made one save for the shutout.

Ironically, the last time the two teams met, last season at Sonoma State, it was the Golden Eagles prevailing by a 2-0 count.

The Golden Eagles battled evenly in the first half. Seattle Pacific had a 7-3 edge in shots, but the only real good scoring chance came when Coca was able to turn away a scoring bid by Oakes just nine minutes in. Cal State L.A. kept the Falcons off the board for the remainder of the half.

In the second half, though, the Falcons turned up the pressure and enjoyed a 9-0 advantage in shots. After Oaks' goal, Coca made a diving save of a shot by Sarah Martinez with 27 minutes remaining to keep the Golden Eagles within striking distance.

The two goals Seattle Pacific managed on Thursday were the only ones allowed by the Golden Eagles in the NCAA playoffs. Cal State L.A. advanced to the regional final with shootout victories over No. 3 seed Chico State and No. 2 seed Seattle University, both after 0-0 ties.
