Golden Eagles Record Their Fifth Straight Win

SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team put an exclamation point on the best regular-season in the program's history Monday in a makeup game at Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles won their fifth straight game, a 1-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in a match originally scheduled on Sunday, Oct. 21, but postponed because of the recent fires. Cal State L.A. (12-5-1, 9-4-1) continues to add to its single-season victory record. The Golden Eagles' previous high win total for a season was nine.

The Golden Eagles finished conference play with 28 points, second in the CCAA South Division, and will take the No. 3 seed for the CCAA Championship Tournament, which will begin Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State L.A. will face No. 2 seed UC San Diego in a first-round game at 11 a.m. UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona did not play as scheduled on Monday and Chico State, which completed its schedule on Saturday, wrapped up the top seed. The Wildcats will face No. 4 seed and tournament host Cal State Dominguez Hills in the other first-round match on Friday.

Cal State L.A., which is ranked seventh in the most recent NCAA Division II Far West Region poll, also posted its ninth shutout of the season, which is also a program record. The Golden Eagles have allowed only three goals in their last nine games and will enter the tournament riding back-to-back shutouts.

Christine Buenrostro scored the game's only goal in the first half with an assist from Liz Franco. It was Buenrostro's third goal of the season and second in two days. She also scored a goal in Sunday's 4-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay. Franco's pass led Buenrostro in on a breakaway and she converted in the 33rd minute.
That was the only scoring in the game. Reyna Coca made two saves for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 10-5 advantage in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
