SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team finished its regular season on a positive note and will now set its sights on the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles got a game-winning goal from
Spencer Tripp with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to beat Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0, Monday in a rescheduled game from Oct. 21. Cal State L.A. (11-5-4, 9-3-2) wound up second in the CCAA South Division with 28 points, which was the third-highest point total in the conference. The Golden Eagles will face North Division champion and No. 1 seed Sonoma State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the first round of the conference tournament at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles, who endured a three-match losing streak that followed a six-match winning streak, are now 2-0-2 in their last four games heading into the conference tourney. Cal State L.A. is making its second straight appearance in the championship tournament.
Tripp collected a cross from
Patrick Thurston in the waning seconds of the match and blasted a shot inside the near post for the game-winner.
Cal State L.A. had a 13-10 advantage in shots.
Noe David made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles to record the shutout.
