Seaside,CA -CSU Monterey Bay, an NAIA team three years ago, pulled off arguably the biggest win since starting the program in 1996. 182 fans witnessed a four-game Otter win over defending West Region champ No. 19 CSU Los Angeles (36-34, 32-30, 20-30, 33-31).
Brittany Etchings led the Otters with 20 and 15 digs, while Nicky Sanderson had 44 assists as the Otters (11-13, 5-10 CCAA) avenged a 3-0 loss in L.A. last month.
The match was back and forth throughout. The upset got going in the first game when the Otters were down 22-20 but tied it at 26 courtesy of 2 CSULA service errors, a net violation and an attack error. The Eagles (15-6, 11-5 CCAA) fought back through 5 game points before the Otters closed out the first game.
The second game was also back and forth with extra points, with CSUMB finally winning.
CSULA found their rhythm and won the third game easily.
CSUMB came back in the fourth. After losing a 19-16 lead, the Otters took advantage of an untimely streak of CSULA errors to regain the lead at 24-22. The Otters played through five match points before getting an Etchings kill to end the match and send the Kelp Bed into a frenzy.
The Golden Eagles return to the northern part of the state next weekend, as the team travels to Chico State Friday night and Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night.
