LOS ANGELES – Erica Prado and Amber de Seriere each scored goals as the Cal State L.A. women's soccer team handed #2 Seattle Pacific their first regular season loss in 60 games, a streak spanning three seasons. The match was the Golden Eagles' first of two in Sonoma State's Seawolf Classic in Rohnert Park.
The Golden Eagles start the year 2-0, while the Falcons drop to 3-1.
Over the course of the game, the Golden Eagles were outshot by the Falcons, 19-10. However, goalkeeper Reyna Coca turned all 10 of the Falcons shots on goals away, with seven of her saves coming in the second half. Coca's Seattle Pacific counterpart, Katie Ruggles, faced five shots on goal, saving three.
The two Cal State L.A. shots that got by Ruggles went into the net about four minutes apart late in the second half. At the 71:18 mark, Prado took Amanda Mathews' pass and, from about 20 yards out, shot the ball right past Seattle Pacific's goalie.
Putting the ball in the net against a team that has recorded 14 shutouts since the start of the 2005 season is no easy feat; but the Golden Eagles did it for the second time as de Seriere's successful penalty kick put the team up, 2-0, with just over 15 minutes left in regulation.
The Golden Eagles were able to hold on and not only defeat, but shutout, #2 Seattle Pacific for one of the biggest wins in the program's history.
Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team plays their second and final match of the Seawolf Classic on Sunday, September 3 as they battle the Western Washington Vikings at 1 pm, in Rohnert Park.
On Friday, September 8, the road trip continues as the Golden Eagles open Conference play with a visit to new CCAA member Humboldt State at 1 pm. On Sunday, September 10, the team is back in Rohnert Park to take their shots at Sonoma State in an 11:30 am match.
