Womens Soccer Wins Season Opener, Defeat Notre Dame de Namur, 3-1

LOS ANGELES – Ana Valverde had a big night in her Golden Eagle debut on Monday, August 28, as Cal State L.A. defeated Notre Dame de Namur at Jesse Owens Track by a score of 3-1. The Golden Eagles are now 1-0, as the Argonauts fall to 0-1.

Just over six minutes into the match, Golden Eagle newcomer Ana Valverde took a pass from 2005 team scoring leader Khadijah Greenwood and sent it into the back of the net. The score would remain 1-0 in Cal State L.A.'s favor until the Argonauts tied the game up early in the second half.

The Golden Eagles responded by taking advantage of two corner kicks. At the 59:03 mark, Valverde scored her second goal of the night as she sent an Erica Prado corner kick past the Notre Dame de Namur goalkeeper, giving Cal State L.A, the 2-1 lead.

With only 11 seconds left on the clock, Prado knocked Valverde's corner kick into the net, cementing the Golden Eagles' 3-1 victory.

The Golden Eagles head out on the road following tonight's match as they get set to take on two regional opponents on the campus of Sonoma State. On Saturday, September 2, Cal State L.A. takes on Seattle Pacific at 1:30 pm, while Western Washington provides the competition on Monday, September 4, at 1 pm.

On Friday, September 8, the Golden Eagles open conference play as they visit new CCAA member Humbolt State at 1 pm. Sunday, September 10, sees the team back in Rohnert Park to take their shots at Sonoma State in an 11:30 am match.

Cal State L.A. returns to Jesse Owens Track on Wednesday, September 13 to take on Cal State Bakersfield as part of a doubleheader featuring the women's team in action following the men's 4:30 pm match. Complete Box Score
