LA JOLLA — Proving that it is difficult to beat a team three times in a season, Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated Cal State L.A., 2-1, to capture the 2006 CCAA Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday at Triton Soccer Field on the campus of UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles, who have beaten the Toros twice this season, now wait to see if they will be in the NCAA West Region playoff field.
With the win, CSUDH captured its sixth CCAA men's soccer championship and fifth since the inception of the conference tournament format in 1998. The No. 4 seed Toros improved their overall record to 15-6-1 while Cal State L.A. falls to 12-8-1.
Jesse Graham sent in the equalizer at 64:48 and a little over two minutes later, Shogo Okuma knocked in the game-winner. Graham, who scored on a cross shot past the defender, was set up by Wilmer Lopez and Julio Madrigal. Lopez also assisted on the winner by Okuma, which was a header off of a corner kick.
Morton Marthinsen had given CSULA a 1-0 lead 21 minutes into the first half on a strike from the far side set-up nicely by a couple of passes by Jason Swope and Jaime Gomez.
Cal State Dominguez Hills' Derby Carrillo played a solid match after he replaced starter Kyle Polak in goal. Carrillo, who had only played in 203 minutes during the season, held CSULA scoreless for almost 57 minutes of play. Polak was removed from the match after being knocked down by a Golden Eagle in the 34th minute.
Cal State L.A. had a small 15-14 advantage on shots. Golden Eagle goalkeeper Patrick Fry had four saves while Polak saved five in the first 30 minutes of the contest.
