Cal State L.A. Advances to CCAA Men's Soccer Championship Match; Defeats Warriors, 2-1

LOS ANGELES – Golden Eagles junior Armando Salgado scored the game-winning goal, his first goal of the season, as Cal State L.A. defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1, in the semifinals of the CCAA Championship Tournament in La Jolla.

With that win, the Golden Eagles improve to 12-7-1 on the season and advance to the CCAA Championship Match to be held on Sunday, October 29, at 11:30 a.m. in La Jolla. Cal State Dominguez Hills, who defeated Sonoma State 2-1 in double overtime, will be the opponent.

Following Derrek Horn's ninth goal of the season, the Golden Eagles took the 1-0 lead into halftime. The goal was scored off of a header from Dennis Idrissa's cross pass. Earlier this week, both Horn and Idrissa were named to the All-CCAA First Team.

With the second half just underway, Cal State Stanislaus tied the game up by firing a shot past Golden Eagle goalkeeper Patrick Fry. Cal State L.A. responded just over a minute later. At 50:19, Idrissa sent a pass to Salgado, who, from six yards out, launched the game-winning goal past the Warriors' goalkeeper.

The Golden Eagles outplayed the Warriors throughout the match. Cal State L.A. had the advantage in several key stats; 6-4 in corner kicks, 21-14 shots, and 10-3 in shots on goal. Three Golden Eagles recorded three or more shots.

With his goal this afternoon, Horn ties Morten Marthinsen for the team lead, each with nine. Idrissa leads the team in assists, with 12, and in points, having recorded 26 on the season. In goal, Patrick Fry has made 73 saves and recorded a goals against average of just 1.57.

Up next for Cal State L.A. is the CCAA Conference Championship match to be held on Sunday, October 29, on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla. The Golden Eagles will face the winner of today's other semifinal match featuring the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros and the Sonoma State Seawolves.
