LOS ANGELES – The Golden Eagles men's soccer team seemed to do everything right against Seattle Pacific in their opening match of the Seawolf Classic in Rohnert Park, but two second half goals by the Falcons sealed Cal State L.A.'s fate as the Golden Eagles lost the match, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles fall to 0-1-1, with the Falcons improving to 2-1-0.
Much like their women's team counterparts, the Seattle Pacific team entered play against Cal State L.A. with 14 shutouts to their credit since the start of the 2005 season. The Falcon defense was certainly tested by the Golden Eagles, as Cal State L.A. controlled much of the game, including outshooting Seattle Pacific, 15-9.
Morten Marthinsen and Jason Swope tested the Seattle Pacific goalie with two shots on goal each, yet neither was able to capitalize on their scoring chances. Marthinsen and Swope combined for eight of the Golden Eagle shots, nearly matching the total of the entire Falcons' roster who took nine shots of their own.
Despite being outshot, Andy Willis snuck the ball past Golden Eagle goalie Patrick Fry just under five minutes into the second half. With just under 20 minutes to play, the Falcons scored their second goal of the match as Michael Morris fired a shot to the back of the net. This was all the offense Seattle Pacific needed as their defense was able to shut down the Golden Eagles' barrage of 15 shots.
Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team plays their second and final match of the Seawolf Classic on Monday, September 4 as they battle the Western Washington Vikings at 2 pm, in Rohnert Park.
On Friday, September 8, the road trip continues as the Golden Eagles open Conference play with a visit to new CCAA member Humboldt State at 4 pm. On Sunday, September 10, the team is back in Rohnert Park to take their shots at Sonoma State in an 2 pm match.
