Cal State L.A. Blanks CPP Men's Soccer Team, 4-0

POMONA – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team scored three goals in the first 35 minutes and went on to record a win over Cal Poly Pomona, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Field. Cal Poly Pomona (3-3-2, 1-2-2) had a three-match unbeaten string snapped by the Golden Eagles, who are now 3-4-1, 2-3-0 CCAA.

Cal State L.A. had its offense clicking in the first half and then the Golden Eagles relied on some sensational goalkeeping from Patrick Fry and Noe David to preserve the shutout.

Cal Poly Pomona ended up with a 15-11 edge in shots, but Fry and David combined for 10 saves for the Golden Eagles. Fry made six saves while playing the first 65 minutes of the match, while David made four saves down the stretch.

Thomas Ryan made one save in the first half and Brad Jones made one save while playing the second half for the Broncos.

Marvin Sandoval opened the scoring just 8:14 into the match when he got free behind the Bronco defense after a pass from Dennis Idrissa, eluded Ryan and shot into an open net.

Idrissa did the scoring honors to make it 2-0 in the 31st minute with an assist from Jason Swope.

Then, just four minutes later, Swope scored with an assist from Sandoval. That gave the Golden Eagles a 3-0 at halftime.

Although the Broncos enjoyed a 13-6 edge in shots while putting on the pressure in the second half, the Golden Eagles held strong and wound up with the only goal over the final 45 minutes. Idrissa got the ball to Jonathan Finley in the penalty box and he knocked a shot into the net past Jones.

The Broncos had some strong chances in the second half, most notably Tomislav Antunovich, who rifled three close-range shots early in the second half that were stopped by Fry. David also made a diving stop of a shot by Cal Poly Pomona's Aaron Borja to keep the shutout in tact.

Cal State L.A. returns home to host Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday, with the start scheduled for 4:30 p.m.Cal Poly Pomona will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal State Monterey Bay.
