SAN RAMON -- Cal State LA's baseball team had three players earn All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Sean Watkins earned second-team honors, while
Andre Gregory and
Joey Deceglie received honorable mention in voting by the conference coaches. Cal State LA (27-22) finished fifth in the CCAA and will open play in the conference championship tournament on Wednesday at 3:05 p.m. against No. 2 seed UC San Diego.
Watkins earned conference honors for a second straight year. Last season, he received first-team recognition after leading the conference in home runs. This year, he is hitting .336 with a team-high 10 home runs despite missing time early in the season because of injury. He has 38 RBI and 29 runs scored.
Watkins was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball draft last season, but returned to Cal State LA to complete his eligibility and earn his degree.
Gregory has been a key addition to the Golden Eagles as a transfer from New Mexico. He is hitting .294 with three home runs, 26 RBI and 37 runs scored. He has also pitched for the Golden Eagles and is 2-0 in five relief appearances with two saves.
Deceglie has also been an important newcomer for the Golden Eagles as a transfer from Cal State Northridge. He leads the pitching staff with a 6-2 record with a 4.12 earned run average. He is first among starters in ERA and is second in innings pitched.
Cal State LA is making its second straight appearance in the CCAA Championship Tournament, which is a double-elimination tourney that runs through Saturday. Cal State LA won the tournament title in 2013.
