Tiare Tuitama helped spearhead one of the best seasons in Cal State L.A.’s women’s volleyball’s history and established herself as one of the top setters in the nation during her outstanding four-year career with the Golden Eagles.

Tuitama was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s Player of the Year in 2005 after leading the Golden Eagles to conference and region championships and a spot in the NCAA Division II semi-finals. The semi-final finish was the best in the program’s history and the 28-3 overall record was the second best.

She earned All-CCAA honors as a sophomore, junior and senior and ended her Cal State L.A. career No. 3 in set assists with 4,246 and No. 2 in digs with 1,326.

Tuitama improved steadily throughout her career. She earned second-team All-Conference honors as a sophomore and helped the team to a 19-11 record. As a junior, she earned first-team All-CCAA honors and led the Golden Eagles back into the NCAA playoffs.

By the time she was a senior, Tuitama had become the top setter in the conference and the region. She led the Golden Eagles to a 16-2 conference record and a share of the CCAA title with Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State L.A. was ranked No. 1 in the region and hosted the regional championships in the Eagles Nest. Led by Tuitama, the Golden Eagles beat Seattle Pacific, Hawaii Pacific and Cal State San Bernardino to win their first regional title since 1992.

Cal State L.A. beat New Haven in five sets in the national quarterfinals before ending its season with a loss to Nebraska-Kearney in the semi-finals.

Tuitama was named to the All-Elite Eight and All-Region tournament teams.

Tuitama is now enjoying great success as a high school coach. She led her girls volleyball team at La Salle High School in Pasadena to the program’s first-ever CIF title in 2012 and Tuitama was named the CIF 1A Coach of the Year. In her first year as the program’s coach in 2011, she was named the CIF Coach of the Year after leading La Salle to the CIF playoffs and into the second round of the state playoffs for the first time.

She is also the coach of the boys program at La Salle and led the team into the playoffs last spring.
