Terry McElligott was Cal State L.A.’s Athlete of the Year in 1963 and an All-American in the 500 and 1650-yard freestyles that year. His 500-yard time was the sixth-fastest by a collegian and his 1650 mark was the 10
th-best.
McElligott was also voted the Most Valuable Swimmer of the 1963 State College Meet after setting records in three events and he was the State College 440-freestyle champion in 1962.
He was Cal State L.A.’s Most Valuable Swimmer for three straight years and set a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association records. He was the CCAA champion in the 220-yard freestyle in 1962 and the 1650-yard freestyle champion in 1963.
In the fall, McElligott competed on Cal State L.A.’s water polo team and earned All-CCAA and All-State honors in that sport as well. He was also the co-chairman of the Varsity Club and the president of the Aquatics Booster Club.
