Sam Turner was the most decorated hurdler in Cal State L.A. track and field history after winning four national championships and earning 10 All-America awards.

He won three NCAA Division II national championships in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1977, 1978 and 1980 and he also won the national championship in the 110 high hurdles in 1980.

Turner still holds the Cal State L.A. record in the 400 hurdles with a time of 49.04 and he is still No. 2 in the 110 hurdles with a time of 13.82.

Turner was the California Collegiate Athletic Association Male Athlete of the Year in 1978.

He was nationally-ranked in the 110 hurdles during the early 1980s, reaching No. 4 in the United States in 1981 and 1982 and No. 7 in 1984.
