Morris was associated with Cal State L.A.’s men’s track and field program for 18 years and was an assistant coach when the Golden Eagles won the NCAA Division II team championship in 1978. During that title run, he coached three pole vaulters who placed first, second and fourth in the national championships and accumulated 23 of the team’s 70 points.

Morris was the head coach at Cal State L.A. from 1968-75.

He was an assistant coach when Cal State L.A. won CCAA championships in 1967 and 1977.

Morris won a silver medal at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and was voted the second-best all-time pole vaulter in the United States by Track and Field News in 1978.
