One of the top long jumpers of the mid-1960s, Rainer Stenius won both the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships in 1966, a feat unequaled for 10 years.

He also finished second in the nation in 1965.

Despite a career interrupted by injuries, Stenius also won two California Collegiate Athletic Association championships in the long jump and in 1966 he upset Charles Craig, who was later the AAU champion – to win the triple jump as well.|

On May 6, 1966, Stenius jumped 26-9.50, making him the No. 4 long jumper in the world. That mark set Finnish, Cal State L.A. and CCAA records.
