Cal State L.A.’s football coaches knew they were on to something when “Joltin’ Joe” Womack ran 52 yards for a touchdown the fourth time he carried the ball.

An outstanding tailback and arguably the best running back in Cal State L.A. history, Womack rushed for a school-record 1,662 yards and averaged 5.7 yards per carry in his three years. He also scored a school-record 156 points in 27 games and set another school record when he returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown against San Diego State in 1959.

When he wasn’t carrying footballs, Womack was running track. He was the NCAA College Division West Region 100 and 220 champion in 1961. He was undefeated in track that year and won the President’s Award as Cal State L.A.’s Athlete of the Year.
