Before Jim Reeder took over as Cal State L.A.’s baseball coach in 1958, the school had only one winning season in eight years. That all changed in a hurry.
In his 14 years of coaching, Reeder turned the program around and recorded a 412-284-4 mark. His winning percentage of .591 was the best in program history.
Reeder’s teams won 60 percent of their games in California Collegiate Athletic Association play (157-103) and won conference titles in 1963 and 1968.
The 1968 team, paced with two .400 hitters, missed a trip to the College World Series by just one out when USC staged a phenomenal rally to edge Cal State L.A. in a three-game playoff.
Cal State L.A.’s baseball field – Reeder Field – is named after the Hall of Fame coach.
