Jack Deutsch was Cal State L.A.’s baseball coach from 1977-83 and his success began in his first year with the program when he was named the 1977 NCAA Coach of the Year. It marked the first time in the history of the NCAA that a coach received this award recognition and did not win the national championship trophy.
Deutsch led the Golden Eagles to their first-ever conference title and a fourth-place national finish at the College World Series after twice defeating Division I powerhouse USC to gain a berth. In the end, Deutsch guided Cal State L.A. to a 42-22 overall record and a 17-7 conference mark. The 42 wins were a school record that stood until 2007.
During his six-year tenure with the baseball program, Deutsch coached 15 all-conference honorees and six major-leaguers, including Tim Corcoran, Bud Billing, Rick Lysander, Freddy Martinez, Rene Gonzales and Darrell Brown. Among his many baseball accomplishments, Deutsch also received the 1988 Professional Baseball Scouting Award.
