No other women’s track and field coach at Cal State L.A. had more success with their student-athletes than Gudren Armanski. During her 20-year tenure, Armanski placed her teams among the nation’s Top-10 from 1973-88.
She coached 13 Olympians, including Rosalyn Bryant, Diane Williams and Denean and Sherri Howard. In all, she coached 26 collegiate champions. In fact, her student-athletes won five consecutive national 400-meter titles from 1977-81.
In 1992, Cal State L.A. won its first of five straight CCAA titles under Armanski. During that season, the Golden Eagles had 19 All-Americans in 13 events and 36 all-conference performers in 18 events. The women’s team finished second in the nation and posted its best national finish ever. For her efforts, Armanski was named the CCAA Coach of the Year. Armanski’s coaching expertise was noticed and rewarded and she was named the 1987 U.S. Olympic Sports Festival West Team Sprint Coach.
