The mainstay of Cal State L.A.’s powerhouse tennis teams in the 1960s, Gary Johnson won the NCAA College Division singles championship in 1964 and 1965. It took 10 years before anyone else won back-to-back national titles.

He was the California Collegiate Athletic Association singles champion in 1964 and 1965 and the NCAA College Division Western Regionals singles and doubles champion both years.
