Frank Candida was Cal State L.A.’s popular sports information director for four years before his death at the age of 39 in 1988.

He was a sports historian for Cal State L.A. for more than 20 years, dating back to his days as an undergraduate at the school. He was instrumental in researching the histories of several Cal State L.A. teams and compiling records for track and field, baseball and basketball.

He was also a veteran courthouse reporter who covered most of the major criminal cases in Los Angeles during the 1970s and early 1980s. He had worked as a reporter at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, the Orange County Register and City News Service.

Cal State L.A.’s Male Athlete of the Year is now named after Frank Candida.
