Cal State L.A.’s women’s tennis program has produced many stars during its illustrious history and few of those stars shined brighter than Edna Olivarez-Nguyen. She won numerous honors as a Golden Eagle, including a pair of NCAA Division II national championships in 1990.
Her string of awards started in her freshman season when she was named the Rookie of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association in 1987. She earned California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year honors in 1989 after capturing the Rolex Southwest Region Championship and finishing second at the Rolex National Tournament.
Her crowning achievement came at the end of her collegiate career when she won the NCAA Division II national singles championship and then teamed up with Jennifer Choi to capture the national championship in doubles as well.
She finished her playing career as a four-time All-American and a three-time team Most Valuable Player at Cal State L.A. She earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting.
