Diana Williams Muhammad enjoyed a record-setting career as a member of Cal State L.A.’s women’s track and field team and still holds school marks in the 100 meters and 4x100 relay.
Williams earned a total of five All-America awards while at Cal State L.A., and helped the Golden Eagles place in the top-10 at the NCAA Division I national championships in 1982 and ’83.
She set the Cal State L.A. 100-meter record of 10.94 in 1983 and teamed with Stephanie Brown, Denean Howard and Jennifer Inniss for a 44.1 clocking the 4x100 relay.
Williams is also part of the No. 2 4x100 relay time of 44.27 set with Sharon Dabney, Jennifer Inniss and Jackie Pusey in 1982. She is still third on the all-time list in the 200 meters with a time of 23.04 that she achieved at the 1983 national championships.
In her first season at Cal State L.A., Williams earned a total of three All-America honors as she and three teammates combined to lead the team to a tie for eighth in the 1982 national championships. She placed fourth in the 100, sixth in the 200 and fourth in the 4x100 relay.
In 1983, she added two more All-America awards while helping Cal State L.A. to a seventh-place national finish. She was second in the 100 with a time of 11.05 and placed fifth in the 200 with a time of 23.04.
Williams was a member of the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic teams and captured a gold medal as part of the U.S. 4x100 relay team at the 1987 IAAF World Championships in Rome, Italy. She also won the gold medal in the 100 at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field
Championships.
She was rated fifth in the world in the 100 by the Track & Field News after earning the bronze medal at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
She is currently the head coach of Chicago State women’s cross country and track and field teams and joined the program in September of 2009. She enjoys leisure running and playing tennis and is also an accomplished author and a television producer.
