David Cappello made a name for himself as one of Cal State L.A.’s most successful tennis players in the late 1950s. Cappello paired with Richard Shikes and Cal State L.A. Hall of Fame member Larry Smith to make Cal State L.A. a major college tennis power from 1956-58.

Cappello won numerous tournaments as both a singles and doubles competitor, including California Collegiate Athletic Association titles in singles (1956) and doubles (1958). Cappello and Smith advanced to the NCAA Division I quarterfinals in doubles in 1958.

After his collegiate playing career, Cappello went on to win numerous municipal and regional titles. He won four singles and doubles titles in the city of Inglewood and was ranked among the top-10 in the Southern California seniors division.

After graduating from Cal State L.A., Cappello worked as a teacher in the Los Angeles and Inglewood Unified school districts for more than 20 years. He also worked as a tennis instructor for the City of Torrance Parks and Recreation Department.
