A two-time Olympian, Barbara Ferrell Edmondson won a gold medal on the U.S. 400-meter relay team in Mexico City in 1968. She also won a silver medal at 100 meters after equaling the Olympic record in a preliminary heat, and she finished fourth in the 200 after twice setting Olympic records in the preliminary rounds.
Ferrell Edmondson came back to finish seventh in the 100 meters in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
She attended Cal State L.A. to obtain her bachelor’s degree and teaching credential in the days before the University had a women’s track and field program.
She was the U.S. 100 champion in 1967 and 1969 and she won the 220 championship in 1969. In 1967, Ferrell Edmondson tied the world record in the 100 and she twice helped the United States break the world record in the 4x100 relay.
